I bought this machine for making a slab cherry kitchen (3/4 MDF veneered fronts with 1/8" thick solid cherry edging, glued and clamped, then planed flush with the veneered panels). The conical cutter head, optional edge guide, and incredibly precise depth setting guarantees perfection with every cut. Forget the Hoffman, get this one. For shelf nosings and such, it will plane a 1" hard maple nosing that's 1/8 proud of the panel to glass smooth in one pass with no tearout (assuming a reasonably fresh blade).
